Chief Engineer Junior
PURPOSE
BASIC FUNCTION: The Chief Engineer Jr. is second in charge of
the Engine Department.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary responsibility of this position is to be familiar with the
Chief Engineer's duties and responsibilities and be prepared to take charge
of the Engine Department without advance notice. Chief Engineer Jr. is
also responsible for the technical aspects of all environmental systems
and processes; he will actively participate in the daily operation and
maintenance of, bilge water and sludge separators, incinerators and their
associated equipment, sewage treatment system, potable water system, food
pulpers, crushers, bailers, compactors, maintaining logbooks and all other
assigned environmental compliance related issues.
The Chief Engineer Jr. also has the following responsibilities and authorities:
- Be thoroughly familiar with all company environmental policies.
- Active supervision and training of the 2nd Engineer Environmental
or 3rd Engineer Environmental.
- Active participation in the daily operation and maintenance of all
environmental systems.
- Work with the Chief Engineer to ensure that all necessary environmental
logbooks are properly completed and that his staff understands that
each entry shall, and must be, accurately and fully completed.
- Work in full cooperation with the Chief Engineer to ensure compliance
with policies and directives to safeguard the environment.
- Work in full cooperation with the Chief Engineer to ensure fuel efficiency
and emissions reductions of all types.
- Work with the Chief Engineer to ensure that all environmental protection
systems and processes within his department are operated and maintained
to corporate standards.
- Work with the Chief Engineer to ensure that all waste streams within
his department are properly treated and disposed of following applicable
international regulations and company requirements.
- Assist the Chief Engineer in all service matters and keep him informed
of significant events and trends pertaining to the operation of the
Engine Department and the welfare and discipline of the department personnel.
- Ensure correct and prompt execution of the Chief Engineer's orders
and submission of required reports.
- Coordinate the repair and maintenance work in the engine rooms, detailing
personnel to their various duties and make arrangements to comply with
the requests from the other departments for assistance. He shall ensure
the necessary safety measures are taken to protect personnel and property
and shall keep the Watchkeeping Engineer informed of the work in progress.
- Oversee the proper maintenance and control of the Hi-Fog, sprinkler
system, CO2 and foam systems.
- Provide for the instruction and training of watch-standing personnel
and assist the Chief Engineer in giving general instruction and training
to the department personnel.
- Assist the Chief Engineer with the department budget proposals.
- Order and follow up equipment and parts for the Engine Department
- Update maintenance work in the Planned Maintenance System.
- The Chief Engineer Jr. shall have sufficient knowledge in the use
of the instruments for measuring hydrocarbons and oxygen, and to train
officers carrying out the measurements.
- Additional routines and work as assigned by supervisor.
- Member of the Shipboard Maintenance Team.
DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Ensures that the bilge water separator, including recorders, monitors,
holding tanks and sludge oil storage and disposal systems are maintained
to ensure proper function at all times.
- Ensures that the incinerator room, garbage room, and garbage cold
room and machinery therein are properly operated, and maintained.
- Ensures that all food pulpers are properly used and maintained.
- Ensures that the sewage treatment plant and gray water systems are
properly operated and maintained.
- Ensures that all potable water systems and associated equipment are
properly operated and maintained.
- In the performance of duties accountable for the care and condition
of the materials and spare parts associated with the machinery and systems
within their areas of responsibility.
- Responsible for ensuring all assigned subordinates are given necessary
instruction for the proper performance of their duties.
- Responsible for the preparation of all reports required in the performance
of their duties.
- Additional routines and work as assigned by supervisor.
