Deputy Security Officer

PURPOSE

BASIC FUNCTION: The Deputy Security Officer's primary responsibility shall be the supervision and control of all points of entry to the vessel. The Deputy Security Officer's main duty hours shall be during the day or as directed by the Staff Captain. However, the Deputy Security Officer's hours must remain flexible enough to deal with any unforeseen circumstances.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Deputy Security Officer's background should be from a maritime environment with shipboard experience. This person should have a professional education in shipboard security methods both physical and documentary with special emphasis on disciplinary measures, drug abuse and narcotic trafficking, interview techniques and anti-terrorist countermeasures. Additionally, the person should have practical experience in fire fighting, damage control and accident prevention methods. The person should possess good communication skills, both verbal and written.

The person in this position should have a basic knowledge and awareness of minor criminal activity. Managerial and organizational skills combined with a basic knowledge of computers are important for this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Deputy Security Officer shall develop a thorough understanding of the vessel’s and company’s safety, quality and management program(s) and his/her responsibilities in the Safety Organization according to the Emergency Plan and Station Bill.. An excellent understanding of the Master's rules and regulations and the company’s policy and a thorough knowledge of the Security manual are essential for this position.

The Deputy Security Officer will report to the Security Officer, but may also assist the Safety Officer as directed by the Staff Captain.

The Deputy Security Officer shall be responsible to monitor all access points of entry to the vessel including the supervision of gangway security staff.

The Deputy Security Officer is responsible for conducting shipboard security training. When directed, the Deputy Security Officer shall also assist other ship officers in fire fighting and life saving training.

The Deputy Security Officer is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of all security equipment. This includes ensuring that database records are properly maintained.

The Deputy Security Officer shall participate in maintaining good order and conduct, throughout the vessel.

The Deputy Security Officer shall conduct frequent security and safety inspections of the vessel.

In cooperation with the Security Officer, the Deputy Security Officer will be on call to assist the Security Supervisors where necessary.

There shall always be good cooperation and hand-over between the Deputy Security Officer and Security/Safety Officer regarding incidents, follow-ups of security cases and gangway operations.

The Deputy Security Officer shall, through observation, preserve the security and safety of the vessel, guests, and the crew.
