First Engineer

PURPOSE

BASIC FUNCTION: The 1st Engineer is the responsible work leader for all work that has to be carried out in the engine room, in close cooperation with the other engineers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• He shall be thoroughly familiar with all company environmental policies.
• He shall work in full cooperation with his superiors and subordinates to ensure compliance with policies and directives to safeguard the environment.
• He shall immediately and directly inform the Chief Engineer when ever an environmental system is improperly functioning and shall always strive to ensure that all environmental systems within his department are operated and maintained to corporate standards.
• He is responsible for all maintenance carried out in the engine spaces, and personally responsible for training new engine crew members in “how to use” protection equipment, fire fighting equipment and where emergency exits are located.
• The fire fighting equipment, safety equipment, fire pumps with equipment, fire system with valves, quick releasing valves for fuel and diesel oil tanks, the Hi-Fog system, CO2, Foam systems, and Halon Plant when applicable.
• Diesel and gas turbine engines with related systems and equipment.
• Workshops including tools and equipment, chain blocks, cranes, and elevator platforms.
• Bunkering of fuel oils and lubricating oils.
• Transfer of oils, sludge, and other liquids from ship to a barge or onto a shore side receiving facility.
• Deck cranes, mooring and anchor winches.
• Additional routines and work as assigned by supervisor.
